Remote Collars: The Most Effective Training Tool That’s Saving Dogs on the Brink

At Obedience Training Centre Australia, we’re not interested in fads or fluff. We’re interested in results, and in saving dogs’ lives.
Every week, we take in dogs who are considered dangerous, too far gone, or impossible to control. These dogs are often under serious threat of being surrendered, medicated, or euthanised. But we don’t see a lost cause. We see a dog who hasn’t been given clear communication, calm leadership, or a fair chance.
Time and time again, remote collars (also known as e-collars) are the tool that turns everything around.
What Is a Remote Collar?
A remote collar is a communication device, not a punishment device. Used properly, it allows a handler to reach the dog at a distance through light, adjustable levels of stimulation that mimic the feel of leash pressure. It’s clear, consistent, and incredibly effective when paired with fair guidance and structure.
We never jump straight to the remote collar. We start by teaching dogs to yield to leash pressure and understand basic commands on a slip lead. Only once those foundations are strong do we layer in the e-collar, using it to reinforce the behaviours the dog already understands.
The result is off-leash reliability, calm and confident behaviour in high-stimulation environments, and a dog that listens regardless of distractions or distance.
Why Remote Collars Save Lives
Many of the dogs we work with have already been recommended for euthanasia. Some have bitten people or animals. Some are completely out of control in public. Others are anxious, fearful, or so overwhelmed by the world they’ve shut down.
But once we teach them what to do, not just what not to do, and use the remote collar as a clean, consistent communication line, these dogs start to thrive.
They relax. They listen. They gain freedom. And they’re able to stay in their homes.
Without the remote collar, many of these dogs would not have made it. That’s the truth.
Misunderstood by Many, Misused by Some, but Invaluable in the Right Hands
We understand the hesitation. Remote collars have been misrepresented in the media and misused by people who don’t understand timing, pressure, or proper training methodology.
But in the hands of professionals who specialise in behaviour modification, they are one of the most humane and empowering tools available. They create clarity. They remove confusion. And they give dog owners the ability to communicate with their dogs in a way that’s fair and effective.
At our training centre, remote collars are not a last resort. They are the tool that gives us the best chance to help dogs others have given up on.
If Your Dog’s Behaviour Feels Hopeless, It Isn’t
Before you consider surrender, medication, or euthanasia, ask yourself: has your dog had real training? Has anyone taught them what to do, step by step, with calm structure and clear communication? Has a remote collar ever been used properly, as a guide, not a punishment?
If not, then your dog hasn’t had their best chance yet. And we’re here to change that.
Ready to See What’s Possible?
Our Board & Train programs are designed to create real, lasting transformation. We use remote collars the right way, as part of a full training system that builds obedience, confidence, and calm behaviour both on and off leash.
